Statement from Rep. Peter DeFazio on Ongoing COVID-19 Public Health Threat
Rep. Peter DeFazio today released the following statement on the ongoing public health threat of COVID-19:
“I am continuing to closely monitor the ongoing public health threat of COVID-19 and have been in daily contact with the Oregon Health Authority. Furthermore, I have been pressing the federal government to ensure adequate resources, including increased testing capabilities, protective equipment, and medical supplies, are being made readily available so that all Oregonians can get tested and Oregon’s medical community has the tools they need to keep our families and communities safe and healthy.
“Early Saturday morning, I voted in support of a bill to provide economic assistance and relief to families, workers, and small businesses impacted by these unprecedented circumstances. The bill also provides $1.2 billion in nutrition assistance for our nation’s families and will ensure that states have the means to provide children who receive free and reduced-price lunch with meals while schools are closed.
“This legislation also ensures that COVID-19 testing is free for everyone, including the uninsured, at no cost to the patient.
“This legislation is not the end, though, which is why the House has already begun working on a third emergency response package. I am working closely with Congressional leadership to ensure we put forward proposals that protect the health, economic security, and well-being of the American people.
“As this situation develops, I will continue working to ensure that the federal government provides all necessary resources, as well as financial assistance, to Oregonians, and that there is a coordinated response at all levels to tackle this public health threat.”
