STATEMENT FROM REP. PETER DEFAZIO ON MISSILE STRIKES IN SYRIA
WASHINGTON—Rep. Peter DeFazio today released the following statement on President Trump’s missile strikes in Syria:
“Bashar al-Assad is a brutal dictator whose inhumane chemical attacks against his own people are an unspeakable atrocity.
“However, President Trump’s actions last night in attacking a Syrian airfield constitute a military action taken without congressional authorization. I have repeatedly called on President Trump to respect Congress’s war-making powers and consult with Congress before committing U.S. troops to any military conflict, as laid out in Article I of the Constitution and the War Powers Resolution. We cannot allow ourselves to be led into another open-ended conflict in the Middle East without clear objectives and an exit strategy. I urge President Trump to immediately consult Congress on his plans for the campaign in Syria, seek congressional authorization under the War Powers Resolution before any further engagement, and let the American people know our exit strategy.”
