Statement from Rep. DeFazio on H.Res 498
“President Trump’s recent remarks about four duly-elected Members of Congress were, without a doubt, racist and xenophobic. He has moved from tropes and dog-whistles to full-throated racist attacks, and his words and actions are unacceptable.
“However, racism and bigotry, while abhorrent, are not impeachable offenses. Impeachment is one of the most serious actions that Congress can take, and it must be based on a solid, factual record of high crimes and misdemeanors.
“Congress must continue its investigative duties and complete a comprehensive inquiry into all of President Trump’s wrongdoings before it files an impeachment inquiry. Should the Judiciary Committee move forward with an impeachment inquiry, I will offer my full support.”
