DeFazio Statement on Urgent Need for Further Coronavirus Relief
As the expiration of the Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC) program rapidly approaches, Rep. Peter DeFazio (OR-04) today released the following statement on the urgent need for the Trump administration and Senate Republicans to end their political games and work to pass additional coronavirus relief legislation for the American people:
“The Trump administration and Senate Republicans have had two months to put forward a comprehensive plan to provide meaningful relief for millions of Americans, and they’re still in disarray. Enhanced and expanded unemployment benefits expire in the coming days, and they still can’t agree amongst themselves how to act.
“In the two months since the House passed the Heroes Act, we’ve seen COVID-19 infections surge across the country, daily death tolls surpass 1,000 for the first time since May, and businesses that had reopened shut down once more.
“Thousands of Oregonians and millions of Americans who cannot yet safely return to work or whose jobs have been permanently lost due to coronavirus are depending on these emergency unemployment benefits, which are about to be abruptly cut off. The abdication of leadership from the Trump administration and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is putting American lives and livelihoods, as well as the well-being of our entire economy, at risk. The Senate must follow the House’s lead and extend these critical lifelines beyond July 31.”
