DeFazio Statement on House Passage of Updated Heroes Act
Rep. Peter DeFazio (OR-04) today released the following statement on the House passage of the updated Heroes Act, House Democrats’ COVID-19 relief package:
“Millions of Americans, including thousands of Oregonians, have been laid off from their jobs. They stand to lose their homes, be unable to afford healthcare when they need it most, and struggle to put food on the table. Seven million Americans have been infected with the deadly Coronavirus, and tragically more than two hundred thousand of them have died. We are living through one of the biggest challenges our nation has ever faced.
“Once again, after months of cruel indifference, the Republicans have refused to help the American people.
“House Democrats have now passed multiple relief bills—containing desperately-needed direct payments to Americans, help for local and state governments to keep law enforcement and health care workers on the job, funding for expanded testing and contact tracing, and money for PPE for frontline workers—and have repeatedly invited Republicans to come to the negotiating table. Instead of working on a bipartisan deal, they walked away and left D.C. The scale of their disregard for the hardship their constituents face is staggering.
“I continue to hope that congressional Republicans and President Trump will agree to work with House Democrats to reach a deal. The American people have been waiting for months—the clock is running out.”
