DeFazio Statement on House Passage of Resolution to Establish Next Phase of Impeachment Inquiry
WASHINGTON, DC—Following is a statement from U.S. Rep. Peter DeFazio (OR-04) on House passage of H.Res. 660, a resolution to establish the next phase of the House impeachment inquiry including open hearings on the abuse of power by the president.
“The president has admitted to soliciting assistance from a foreign leader to interfere with U.S. elections and aid his political campaign, which is a felony offense, a violation of the Constitution, a betrayal of the American people, and an impeachable offense. His grave actions threaten our national security and the very foundation of our democracy.
“Since his confession, the evidence brought forward by numerous witnesses has validated and even expanded on the president’s offenses, including withholding congressionally-approved taxpayer dollars to blackmail the Ukrainian president into aiding his political campaign. This offense, which was confirmed by White House Chief of Staff, is an additional violation of the law and the Constitution.
“Today the House approved a resolution that establishes the next phase of the House impeachment inquiry. It lays out the format for open hearings in the House and transfer of evidence to the Judiciary Committee, continues joint participation in the inquiry by the majority and minority parties in the House – as has already been the case – and sets forth due process rights for the president in the proceedings as the Committee prepares articles of impeachment for consideration by the full House.
“We will continue this process in a fair and deliberate manner. The integrity of our national security and the health of our democratic republic depend on it.”
