DeFazio Questions Department of Justice Surveillance of Oregonians Opposed to Jordan Cove Project
Washington, DC—U.S. Rep. Peter DeFazio today in a letter to U.S. Attorney General William Barr, questioned the legality of reported surveillance of Oregonians opposed to the Jordan Cove liquified natural gas (LNG) pipeline and processing facility.
“Many of those protesting the Jordan Cove project are landowners – ordinary people - who are opposed to property seizure through eminent domain,” said DeFazio in the letter. “Spying on Americans who have made no threats nor participated in violent actions because they oppose a potential federal government action goes against the fundamental freedoms of every American.”
DeFazio requested a prompt response from the Attorney General including the legal justification for the surveillance and current status of the operation as well as notifying those citizens who have been the subject of monitoring by the Department of Justice.
