DeFazio Pushes Back Against Dramatically Accelerated Timeline to Close Roseburg VA Medical Center Emergency Department

Aug 6, 2019
Press Release

Rep. Peter DeFazio today sent a letter to VA Roseburg Healthcare System (VARHS) Director Keith Allen expressing concerns with the recent decision to accelerate the closure of the medical center’s Emergency Department and convert  the facility to an Urgent Care clinic as soon as August 16, 2019.

DeFazio writes,

“The decision to cease preparations and move forward abruptly with this plan is an alarming departure from what you have communicated to veterans, my office, and local media…It is difficult to understand why you abandoned your initial plan to provide a thoughtful and deliberative process that addressed the issues raised by veterans and other stakeholders.”

VARHS leadership had previously communicated that the conversion process would take months, likely through the end of 2019. Allen’s recent media comments also assured veterans and community stakeholders that the process would be “open and honest.”

In the letter, Rep. DeFazio asks Director Allen to explain the rationale behind this decision and to provide more information about how high-quality care for veterans will be maintained at both the new Urgent Care clinic as well as community hospitals.
