Defazio Applauds Response to Calls for Automatic Covid-19 Economic Impact Payments to Certain Veterans
Rep. Peter DeFazio (OR-04) today applauded the Treasury Department and U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ response to calls for automatic COVID-19 economic impact payments to veterans and their beneficiaries who receive Compensation and Pension (C&P) benefit payments.
“Our nation’s veterans put their lives on the line for our country—the idea of making it more difficult for them to receive their Economic Impact Payments during this crisis is unconscionable,” said Rep. DeFazio. “After the 2008 financial crisis, millions of veterans and their beneficiaries did not receive a stimulus check because of bureaucratic red tape. I applaud the VA and Treasury Department for reversing their wrong-headed decision and automatically providing greater economic stability for these veterans and their beneficiaries.”
As part of the economic recovery from the impacts of the COVID-19 public health crisis, the IRS will automatically send economic impact payments to eligible taxpayers who filed a 2018 or 2019 tax return. However, many veterans who receive pensions typically do not file tax returns, because they often do not owe taxes.
DeFazio led more than 120 lawmakers in urging the Trump Administration to automatically send payments to automatically send payments to SSI beneficiaries and veterans receiving pensions.
